Mrs. Doubtfire
Mrs. D. came to me on a scorching hot summer day and was looking for water. I gave her a big drink and she stuck around for several years. I start taking Christmas pics about the first week of September. The hogs have a great colored coat by then and are plenty chubby too.

Happy Easter to One and All 2010 from Spanky!
Happy Easter to One and All 2010 from Spanky!
As Springtime approaches for 2010,it is late March and I cannot wait to see who will start to visit soon. With all of the bad snows and rains of this late Winter it has been hard for these little animals to survive. I haven't seen any groundhogs for nearly 3 weeks again. Charlotte and Charlie who appeared in early February are no where to be seen. I am a bit worried the bad weather has been too much for my critters. Time will tell.
Shy Baby
Hey who said you could come into my yard. Sign says"No Raccoons!".

It is always fun to see who had babies and how many there are.
This photo reminds me of Mother's Day 2010.
Mother's Day was a busy day.
I thought it would be a quiet day because the hubby had worked the night shift all weekend, doing demolition on a large bridge(his job),and we would all be quiet while he slept. My son surprised me with a beautiful orchid plant and tiger lillies.
Hubby woke up late in the morning and we went out for a bite to eat and he got me flowers too. YAY.
My son and his girlfriend had a Mother's Day picnic to attend,so they were off.
Shortly after they left a panic call came into me.
MOM...........you have to come right away!!! Bring a box, there is a baby groundhog in the middle of the road and I am parked in the middle of the road trying to keep anybody from running it over!!!!
I am by the park, hurry up!

I told hubby, " Load up the truck,Hurry, hurry, hurry!
We have a rescue run".We were off in a flash. (Of course he thinks I am a little nuts anyway, but he accomodates my request.
Since my son was only 2 miles away, we there in no time.
My son is parked off to the side of the road.
How did you get him off the road?",I asked.
My son said,"this man stopped to help me and put his coat around the baby and handed him to me."
We looked in his truck and there he is holding a baby groundhog all wrapped up in the strangers coat. He left his coat behind and said good luck. What else is a son supposed to do except call Mom??
To my surprise the little hog was so small he fit in my hand. It was a little boy hog. I think a car had whizzed over top of him and caused this look of sheer panic and shock in the little groundhog's eyes. I named him Lucky.
Soooooooo,my son went on to his picnic and now it's hubby and I with this little hog. He was just so adorable. Never tried to bite or anything. He just snuggled in the jacket and closed his eyes.
Well, we decided we would go into the park opposite from where the hoglet was in the road and look for his den.
As we went into the main entrance, the Park Ranger's were patrolling. We stopped and got permission to look for the Lucky's den.
The Ranger's said,"Just take him home with you",in a real kidding fashion.
He said,go right ahead and see if you can find his den.

Hubby and I moved down the road.
We reached the destination of where we had seen the hoglet in the road.
Hubby said to me,there's the mother groundhog right there. I jumped out of the truck and moved ever so slowly toward the mother hog. I was making my stupid little groundhog noises so she wouldn't run away.
Would you believe when I let the little guy go,he went right to his mother and it was a grand reunion.
It really was a GREAT Mother's Day for one and all and I loved it!!

Wanda was saved from possible harm. She is one of the most unusual colored groundhogs I have ever seen. She is like a game of hide and seek and doesn't stick around too long.

Picnic robbery
You know you have a reputation in the neighborhood for providing snacks for the groundhogs when they rob the picnic table. Carrots obtained by jumping up on the chair and then the table. RASCALS!!!!

Charlie is a pip. He chases everybody else out of the yard and whistles and complains the entire time. This bad boy growls, stomps, chuckles, chatters his teeth and does all the things dominate males do. One problem... He's only 6 months old.

Sparky the Great!
Sparky the Great!
Sparky is an unusual groundhog as he feeds at night. I can set my watch to what time he comes out. Usually 10:30PM. He will eat alongside the raccoons and skunks and does not run away when I come out to see hime. I can pet him as well.
Shadow

Only the Shadow knows... Shadow is a very shy groundhog. It took her weeks to close to me but when she did it was very nice to see her interact with the other groundhogs.

Madam Stomper
Madam Stomper
Stomper is part of the original 4 babies. She is now 7 1/2 years old and about 15 pounds of sheer crankiness. She stomps on anything that looks like food. She will come rolling up the hill, eyeball a piece of carrot, run as fast as she can go,and then stomps on it with both front feet. She is so big she actually makes a thud on the ground!!
Bucky Boy

Miss Snippies
Miss Snippies
Snips is and incredible female who walks about with her head held so high in the air,she actually looks snooty!. She does love her pumpkin picking though.
Buddy
Buddy
Buddy was always the one who would pose for carrots and peanuts. Buddy lived to be 7 years old. He looked at me one more time before he went into hibernation last year and I never saw him again. He will always be special.
I am glad you are joining me for this groundhog adventure. No matter what you call them,
woodchucks, groundhogs, whistle pigs, marmots, pasture poodles, moley moles, you will see hogs in a different light after viewing my photos.
Please know that all of these creatures are wild and free and all of these encounters are made in my yard.
This all started 7 years ago with  four baby groundhogs named,Buddy,Bear,Stomper and Shy Baby.
Their Mom had passed away from an illness and I became mother and caretaker for these 4 little babies. They all remained wild but returned to my yard everyday for treats and snacks. In the afternoons they would often just sit by my side
and visit until the sun went down.  As time went by and they grew larger, they would follow me around the yard like puppies. Here are some of the stories about my critters.

The photo above is Bear Bear. Bear only has a half of a tail because when he was little, another groundhog bit his tail in half. I doctored him up and we were best pals.

Bernie....The spoiled hog!!
Bernie....The spoiled hog!!
Little Bernie is the most spoiled and friendly little groundhog I have ever experienced. He will sit on my lap and make cooing sounds. He will let me wrap him in blankets and hats. He sits up and talks little groundhog sounds. Simply an amazing animal. He was rescued and I guess he remembers that. He also loves to be brushed. His fur is very soft around the face.
Charlie the bad boy.
By the end of Summer, naughty Charlie turns into a very handsome boy,but ohhhh
so cranky!!!
Charlie the bad boy.
Each animal has their own personality and habits.
Over the past years I have photographed all of the animals with added generations of hogs every Spring. I hope you enjoy this site.
